The below is a report from Mr. Hattori, JOCV.
In Rumphi and Muzimba districts in Malawi, their budget at public schools are extremely limited , and of course not only textbooks but also play equipment are insufficient including footballs. So, many students who love to play football can only play with a ball made by a paper or clothing.
After hearing about Malawi Fund, we conducted a needs survey to some schools. Then, teachers and schoolchildren requested footballs because a lot of students can use them together.
After the survey, we bought and delivered the footballs to the target schools which are not supported by government or other organization. Immediately after the delivery, many children happily started playing with the balls in their playground.
A teacher told me “These balls should change their future because children is our future and the balls brought them amazing joy. We really appreciate your support.” Also, many teachers and schoolchildren showed their sincere appreciation.
In the target areas, there are so many children who can’t go to school due to helping housework and farming . I have also heard not going to school made them difficult to catch up with classes, then lose their motivation of going school. I strongly believe this donation enable them to access to school by playing football at school.
Regarding Rumphi district where I am working at, it is a peaceful rural town surrounded by mountains with humble and warm people. On the other hand, their life is very severe. For example, many people including young people are suffering with not being able to buy manure, pay school fee and find a job.
Because of this situation, my activity is to increase their income by small business by constant monitoring to villages. Then, I have noticed some people rely on only donations but others have high motivation for their own business. They, however, can’t get out of a poverty cycle because their business opportunity is very poor in villages. For example, they don’t have start-up resources and methods to produce something. I ,therefore, hope they will be able to earn money by themselves by my activity on providing business skills of marketing and bookkeeping.
Thank you.
